Mercy Athletics proudly recognized Sophia Kallabat and Clare Hafner as recipients of the Nancy "Mal" Malinowski Award, one of the school's highest honors for student athletes.
Named after beloved former Mercy Athletic Director Nancy "Mal" Malinowski, the award is presented annually to seniors who excel as multi-sport athletes while demonstrating outstanding academic achievement, leadership, sportsmanship, and character.
Sophia Kallabat earned recognition for her accomplishments in both swimming and hockey. In swimming, she was named Academic All State in 2025 and was a member of four CHSL Championship teams and three MHSAA State Championship teams during her Mercy career.
On the ice, Kallabat established herself as one of the top hockey players in Michigan, earning All State honors in 2025 and 2026, three All Catholic selections, and All Academic honors in 2026.
Beyond athletics, Kallabat was recognized for her leadership, work ethic, and positive influence on teammates and the Mercy community. Her dedication, humility, sportsmanship, and team first mentality embody the spirit of the award.
Clare Hafner was also honored for her impact both athletically and academically throughout her time at Mercy. A standout member of the Swim and Dive program, Hafner served as team captain and earned All State honors three times, along with two All Catholic selections, three All County honors, and All League recognition in the OAA. She was also a member of three State Championship swim teams and received the Miss Marlin Award, voted on by her teammates.
In Track & Field, Hafner earned both All Catholic and All County honors and was a member of Mercy's school and CHSL record setting 4x800 relay team.
Hafner's accomplishments extended well beyond athletics. She served as a Science Club leader and participated in Link Crew, Spanish Honor Society, and National Honor Society. She was recognized as both a Mercy Scholar Athlete and AP Scholar with Distinction, while also earning the Global Seal and Michigan Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish. Hafner was also named a Valedictorian/Salutatorian finalist.
