Mercy Athletics proudly recognized Ella Andrews and Nora Gerzema as 2026 recipients of the Garn Griffin Athletic Award, an honor that celebrates student athletes who exemplify excellence both in competition and within the Mercy community.
Named in memory of longtime Mercy Athletics supporter Garn Griffin, the award recognizes individuals whose accomplishments extend beyond athletics to include leadership, academics, sportsmanship, and commitment to Mercy's Mission and Values.
Ella Andrews established herself as one of the top volleyball players in the country during her career at Mercy. Andrews was a two time All American, two time All State honoree, two time All Region selection, two time All Catholic selection, and Miss Volleyball nominee. She also helped lead Mercy Volleyball to two MHSAA State Championships before continuing her academic and athletic career at Stanford University.
Beyond her accomplishments on the court, Andrews was recognized for her leadership, humility, work ethic, and commitment to her teammates and the Mercy community.
Nora Gerzema, was honored for her standout career in both Cross Country and Track & Field. A multiple time team captain, Gerzema earned recognition as one of the premier distance runners in Michigan while serving as a leader throughout Mercy Athletics. Nora has consistently led by example through her work ethic, determination, humility, and unwavering commitment to her teammates.
In Cross Country, Gerzema was a three time State Qualifier, two time All Catholic honoree, and three time All County selection. In Track & Field, she qualified for the state finals in five different events, earned Regional Championships in the 800 meter run and 4x800 relay, and won CHSL titles in both the 1600 meter run and 4x800 relay. She also earned multiple All Catholic honors across several events.
Gerzema will continue her academic and athletic career at Purdue University.
Both Andrews and Gerzema were recognized not only for their athletic accomplishments, but for the lasting impact they made through their leadership, resilience, sportsmanship, and dedication to Mercy Athletics.
