Gary Morris
As we enter the 2024-25 season, Coach Gary Morris brings 28 years of experience as a varsity head coach with an impressive overall record of 483-181, ranking him 19th all-time for wins in the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA). His 20 seasons at Mercy have been especially notable, with a record of 345-129.
Coach Morris has led his teams to 13 Central/AA division titles, 6 Catholic High School League (CHSL) championships, 21 District championships, 2 Regional championships, and 1 MHSAA Final Four appearance. His coaching excellence has earned him multiple Coach of the Year honors from organizations such as the Catholic League Coaches Association, The Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM), the Detroit Free Press, the Detroit News, the Oakland Press, and others.
A proud graduate of Oakland University, Coach Morris earned his teaching certificate from Madonna University. His commitment to Catholic education spans over 35 years, having coached and taught in a variety of roles. He served as both the coach and Athletic Director at Bishop Foley from 1995 to 1999, and as the Assistant Coach for Women's Basketball at the University of Detroit Mercy from 1999 to 2002.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to Catholic high school athletics, Coach Morris was inducted into the Catholic High School League Hall of Fame in 2009, a testament to his decades of dedication, leadership, and success.
Throughout his career, Coach Morris has not only built championship-winning teams but has also left an indelible mark on his athletes and the broader community, making him a respected figure in Michigan high school basketball.
