11/12/2025 6:10:00 PM

The Mercy High School Athletic Department is excited to announce Ken Kandt as its new Head Coach of Track & Field.

Coach Kandt brings over 30 years of coaching experience to the program, with a lifelong passion for developing student-athletes both on and off the field.

"When I first came to Mercy, my focus was on teaching the girls to throw the shot put and discus — but I quickly came to appreciate the deeper culture and heartbeat of this school," said Coach Kandt. "Watching the throwers, runners, and other field event athletes, along with the dedicated coaching staff, showed me what makes this program so special. I'm truly honored to lead the Mercy Track & Field team, continue its great legacy, and work with these amazing young athletes."

Coach Kandt began his coaching career at just 19 years old at Carter Middle School in Warren, where he once attended as a student. He later coached at Sterling Heights High School before spending most of his career at Brother Rice High School. During his time there, he worked under Catholic League Hall of Famers Bob Stark and Mike Popson, serving not only as a track and field coach but also as a teacher, assistant athletic director, dean of students, and coach for both football and wrestling.

Throughout his tenure, Coach Kandt helped lead multiple teams to regional championships, with many of his athletes earning top finishes in the CHSL, Oakland County, and State Meets. Beyond the MHSAA, he has also coached athletes to success at the national level through AAU and USATF competitions.

As an athlete himself, Kandt was an All-County and All-State performer in high school and competed collegiately for the University of Detroit Mercy.

Athletic Director Brandon Malinowski commented:

"I am extremely excited to have Ken lead the Mercy Track & Field program into the future. He will build on the program's success and help us achieve our ultimate goal of a state championship. Ken's vision focuses on developing each athlete through hard work, guidance, and care, helping them grow both as athletes and as students. He has already lined up quality coaches in every specialty area to help make this vision a reality. I am confident in Ken and the exceptional coaching staff surrounding him."

Mercy Athletics is thrilled to welcome Coach Kandt's leadership, experience, and passion for mentorship to the Marlin Track & Field program.
