Mercy Golf Clinches Third Straight State Championship

10/21/2024 12:37:00 PM

Mercy Golf claimed their third consecutive MHSAA Division 2 State Championship this weekend.  The tournament was played at The Meadows at Grand Valley State University on a perfect weekend for golf. Mercy positioned themselves well for the second day of competition, shooting a 334 the first day and holding an eight-stroke lead over second place.  The Marlins were able to hold on and win the state championship three-peat by five strokes with a team score of 677.

Despite starting the day with an 8-stroke lead, the competition was tight. Coach Vicky Kowalski said, "It was a crazy day today. The scores were bouncing up and down, and girls were having their good holes and bad holes, and at one point, we were down by one."

The team was led by captain Maeve Casey '25, who finished fourth overall in the individual standings with a two-day total of 152. Her consistent play anchored the team's performance, but it was a collective effort across the board. Captain Lila Polakowski '25 shot a 169, followed by Macey Mophew '25 with a 179, and sophomore Megan Guerrera '27, carding a 186.

A key moment came from senior Emily Walker, who didn't play on Day 1 but stepped in on Day 2 to deliver a career-low 83. Her clutch performance was the boost the team needed to seal the victory.  "We have a mix of players, so today we inserted Emily Walker; she had the score of her life," Mercy coach Vicky Kowalski said. "And that's why we're standing here with the three-peat."
